Abstract

The 21-hour pyloric ligated (Shay) rat model was used to assess the ulcer-sparing potential of locally administered prostaglandin 15 (R) 15 methyl-E 2 methyl ester. Animals receiving intraluminal injections of 25 or 50 ug prostaglandin/kg. body weight at the time of pyloric ligation showed a reduced incidence and severity of gastric and oesophageal ulceration when compared to controls. The mean acid content of the stomach at sacrifice was also lower in treated animals. The mechanism and significance of this ulcersparing effects are discussed.
