Abstract

Ultraviolet light of wavelength 2537 A inactivates proteins kept at liquid air temperature 1 3 as rapidly as at room temperature. The quantum yield for inactivation at room temperature of chymotrypsinogen is 0.011, of DNA-ase 0.0039, of catalase 0.00045. DNA forms a water-insoluble gel when irradiated with ultraviolet light. The formation of this gel is the same at liquid air and room temperatures.
