Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between the indoor environment and occupant satisfaction and performance and the mechanism of this relationship in nonprofit buildings, specifically libraries. Surveys were delivered to university libraries in three northeastern provinces. A total of 556 valid face-to-face interview questionnaires were collected and checked by reliability and validation tests. A structural equation model was used to analyze the relationships between the latent variables. The characteristics of regional occupants and their behaviors were examined, and the results show that occupant satisfaction is a complete mediator, and the total effect of interior design (ID) and indoor environment quality (IEQ) is positive for performance. Thus, satisfaction has a positive and strong impact on performance. The impact mechanism was determined, and it indicated that in order to improve occupant performance, their satisfaction should first be improved by the enhancement of the indoor environment. This study is the first to apply and integrate cross-field customer satisfaction index(CSI)theory with post-occupancy evaluation (POE) theory to analyze nonprofit buildings in the northeastern region of China.
