Abstract
Objective To evaluate the therapeutic effect of laser photocoagulation on the multifocal posterrior pigment epitheliopathy (MPPE).Methods Eighty-three patients with MPPE were examined with visual acuity,slit-lamp biomicroscope, ophthalmoscope, three mirror lens, and FFA (fundus fluorescein angiography) before and after laser treatment. After treatment, all cases were followed up for six months to one year with averaged time 7.2 months. Results After the first photocoagulation,in 110 eyes,36 cured after the second additional photocoagulation;43 treated to leakage vanished after the third to forth additional photocoagulation;24 treated to leakage disappeared after the fifth to sixth additional photocoagulation;1 eye treated to leakage vanished when managed to the ninth photocoagulation,6 were failed. Conclusions Early photocoagulation for confined multifocal posterrior pigment pitheliopathy is effective. The patients have vision improvement, while the patients of longtime or extensive (more than 4PD) multifocal posterrior pigment epitheliopathy have poor vision outcome. However photocoagulation can help the retina reattachment and shorten the course of disease. Key words: Multifocal posterrior pigment epitheliopathy; Photocoagulation; Retinal pigment epithelium/Multiply fluorescein leakage
