Abstract

SummaryThe behaviour of nickel deposits under conditions of corrosion fatigue is influenced both by mechanical and chemical factors. It is possible to follow crack propagation m such nickel deposits by potential measurement in combination with metallographic examination. Chemical nickel coatings may be very sensitive to the formation of cracks, due to the simultaneous effect of corrosion and mechanical fatigue. Electroplated nickel coatings which show compressive stress are capable of protecting steel against corrosion fatigue even at relatively high mechanical stresses. The reasons for this contradictory behaviour are discussed.
