Abstract

The effect of intermittent light treatment on rate of growth of broilers 3 to 7 weeks of age was investigated under commercial conditions. All chickens received continuous light from day-old to 3 weeks of age and then were exposed to one of the following: 1) continuous light; 2) 9L: 3D:9L: 3D; 3) 8L: 4D: 8L: 4D. Body weights were obtained.Broilers exposed to continuous light and then switched to intermittent light at 3 weeks of age were statistically heavier (P<.05) than those on continuous light when sampled at 4, 5, 6, and 7 weeks of age. In addition, intermittent light treatment saved up to 33% of the calculated electrical lighting cost used during the 3- to 7-week periods.
