Abstract

A study has been made of haemostasis and permeability in rabbits in which prostaglandin synthesis inhibition was induced by indomethacin. Prostaglandin activity of the mesentery increased with time after preparation. Prostaglandin synthesis was completely inhibited and micromolecular leakage in post-capillary venules diminished after indomethacin treatment. PGE 1 prolonged haemostatic plug formation time whereas indomethacin decreased venular haemostatic plug formation time, abolishing the difference normally seen between arterioles and venules. It is suggested that this difference is due to prostaglandin induced inhibition of platelet aggregation on the venular side of the microcirculation.
