Abstract

Slow-reacting substance of anaphylaxis (SRS-A), a potent bronchoconstrictor and putative mediator of asthma, consists of the leukotrienes C4, D4, and E4. Initial studies have demonstrated that LJC4 and LTD4, like SRS-A, are potent constrictors of human airways. However, many questions remain about the properties of these substances and their role in asthma. In the present study we administered LTD4 by aerosol to individuals with different baseline airway reactivities to define its dose-response characteristics, identify its site of action, and determine whether the baseline airway reactivity affects the response to LTD4.
