Abstract
Economists conventionally assume that tastes are exogenous. If this approach is correct then information on how the government allocates and finances its expenditure should have no influence on the preferences of individuals for these fiscal variables. This paper presents the results of a survey which was designed to test this assumption. The paper concludes that preferences are influenced in a systematic manner by information about the current values of government expenditure and taxation.
