Abstract

The effect of histones on RNA and protein synthesis at the early developmental stages of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus has been studied. It was found that histones inhibited RNA syntheis at the early developmental stages of sea urchin. Moreover, they inhibited protein synthesis in embryos. The inhibition of protein synthesis with histones applied does not seem to be explained by their direct effect on the protein-synthesizing machinery in embryos, but may be associated with the inhibition of RNA synthesis. The data obtained allow the conclusion that the previously found inhibitory effect of histones on the early embryogenesis of sea urchin [11] is due to the inhibition of RNA synthesis.
