Abstract

AbstractThe purpose of the work was to find out to what degree the effect of promoting the uptake of 35S was dependent upon free access of acid to the duodenal lumen. The pylorus was ligated in 32 young male guinea pigs. Histamine in a dose of 3 mg/kg body weight was administered subcutaneously as the 35S sulphate given immediately after the operation. The animals were sacrified 24 hours later. It was found that the uptake of 35S sulphate was increased both in the duodenal mucosa and in the underlying“stroma”. The results would indicate that in the guinea pig histamine stimulates the synthesis of mucus in the duodenum also under conditions where the effect of acid has been eliminated.
