Abstract
Electromagnetic mass differences of baryons, baryon resonances and vector mesons are calculated with a simple quantal model. Baryons and baryon resonances are considered as SU(3) bound states in the baryon-pseudoscalar system. In the case of baryons, the channels consisting of baryon resonances and pseudoscalar mesons are considered too. The correct signs and magnitudes of electromagnetic mass differences are obtained. On the other hand, when an SU(2) boundstate model is used and when only the effect of the lowest-lying channels is respected, the results disagree violently with experimental data.
