Abstract
High temperature exposure tn air causes the penetration of oxygen into the alloy and the formation of the brittle surface layer, α-case. The steady state creep rates of exposed specimens are lower than those for vacuum treated specimens within a certain range of stresses and temperatures. High temperature exposure also results in increasing the strength of the alloy. Removal of the α-case does not significantly 7 and therefore it is concluded that the effect of high temperature exposure on the mechanical properties is due to oxygen penetration into the matrix.
