Abstract
The intensities of the N2 second positive system have been examined when the system is excited in a wide range of helium - nitrogen mixtures. The results have been used to determine the relative populations of the excited states, which are found to depend only on the total pressure, and also to assess the range of applicability of the background theory. The calculated Franck - Condon factors have been shown to be mainly reliable, but the electronic transition moment is found to vary with conditions, contrary to theoretical expectations.
