Abstract

Objective The present study investigated the effect of Glutamine on shape of liver and colon in rats with short bowel syndrome. Methods 23 male Sprague-Dawley rats underwent a 80% small bowel resection, randomly divided into three groups:food group(n=8) rats was fed with rat chow and water ad libitum after operation;total parenteral nutrition(TPN) group(n=8) was infused with standard TPN;glutamine(Gln) group(n=7) was infused with Gln-supplyed TPN; eight normal male rats served as normal control group. On seventh day after operation, hepatic function was determined, liver and colon was harvested for histological observation (include optic microscopy and electron microscopy). Results ALb in food group、control group and Gln group was significantly higher than that in TPN group,TP in Gln group was significantly higher than in TPN group, There was hepatic steatosis change in Gln group(2/7) and TPN group(3/8) in optic microscopy, without statistical significant difference between Gln group and TPN group.Colonic mucosal thickness in food group was significantly bigger than that of control group, Colonic mucosal thickness in Gln group was significantly bigger than that in TPN group。 Conclusions Gln promoted colonic mucosal hypertrophy.Gln dould not decrease hepatic steatosis in the present experimental condition,Gln was favorable to maintain TP and ALb level of blood.
