Abstract
The relative free volume has been calculated for a series of MgSO 4-poly(ethylene glycol) 8000 aqueous two-phase systems to which KCl was added. Addition to KCl was shown to change the free-volume difference between the phases. The partition coefficient of a dye, Safranin O, was shown to be related to the value of the free-volume difference, regardless of the KCl concentration.
