Abstract

Particle image velocimetry (PIV) and its advantages in fluid flow applications are discussed. The adoption and application of classical speckle metrological analysis techniques in PIV are described. An optical transform method for image analysis is outlined and the effect of the flow turbulence on the visibility of the resulting interference fringes demonstrated. Changes in visibility of the fringes due to the interrogating beam profile and particle image size distribution are discussed. Consideration is given to the likely accuracy of turbulence estimates obtained from fringe visibility measurements by comparing fringes obtained from a digital flow simulation with the corresponding analytically predicted interference pattern.
