Abstract

The flow in a suction volute casing of a double suction pump was investigated, paying attention to the relation between the pump performance and the flow pattern. The volute type casings tend to bring higher pump head near the shut-off point than that obtained with the aid of a normal type casing. It is clarified that the increase of shut-off head is caused by the opposite prerotation of the inlet flow to the impeller near the hub side.
