Abstract

THE American literature on the value of poultry grit has been well reviewed by Waite (1935), and his conclusions can be summarized in a few statements. Most of the work on the subject has consisted of comparing the growth, egg production, and feed consumption of one group of birds receiving grit with those of another group which did not receive grit. It has been definitely proved that birds can be successfully raised and maintained without access to any grit. However, several workers have observed that birds without grit consumed more feed per unit gain in weight.Danilova, Solun, Chlebnikov, and Poliakov (1933) reported that the addition of grit did not improve the digestibilty of crude fiber, but that it did increase the digestibility coefficients for protein, fat, and carbohydrates.The question of the effect of grit on the utilization of different feeds has received little attention.
