Abstract
Abstract Various feed gases have been introduced into the cavity of a plasma jet igniter and their effect upon the early stages of the combustion process studied in a combustion bomb. Increases in the combustion rate are found to occur in support of previously reported studies by Weinberg and co-workers. We have extended the latter measurements by using a greater variety of feed gases and have determined that at least in these measurements the increased rate of combustion is directly related to the heat of combustion of feed gas. Whether the above relationship has a physical basis or whether the heat of combustion parameter serves merely as a suitable indicator of the carbon and hydrogen content in the feed sample is not yet determined.
