Abstract

The laser is rapidly becoming an accepted tool for drilling of cooling holes in a variety of turbine components. The total cost savings are potentially great, due to the large number of holes which must be drilled. Literally tens of thousands of holes must be drilled in components in each engine. Only five years ago, virtually none of these holes were being drilled with a laser. Today, although we do not know the actual number of holes being drilled by a laser, we do know that they are being drilled in components used in virtually every engine section. The laser is rapidly becoming an accepted tool for drilling of cooling holes in a variety of turbine components.
