Abstract

Exchange transfusion in newborn infants for hyperbilirubinemia or sepsis resulted in a mean reduction in ampicillin blood levels of 35.2% (range 6.2–79%), and a 33.1% reduction in serum gentamicin blood levels (range 12.1–60%). In the septic newborn patient undergoing exchange transfusion, it is advisable to monitor serum levels of these antibiotics.
