Abstract

Changes in the thickness and chemical composition of thin amorphous Gd-Fe films were studied as a function of the substrate-source distance and as a function of the active surface area of the heater. The evaporation time interval leading to the maximum uniformity of the films obtained was also determined. For selected samples the hysteresis loop was measured from VH=f(H) using the transverse Hall effect. Some films exhibited rectangular hysteresis loops suggesting the existence of a magnetic anisotropy direction perpendicular to the surface of the deposited layer.
