REcENT ME orcA L literature contains numerous reports dealing with the time interval between complete delivery of the newborn infant and umbilical cord clamping. The duration of this interval is related to the infant's blood volume/• 2 affects total iron stores,3 and may influence the normal physiologic changes that accompany the birth process. • 5 • 6 Reports also relate early or late cord clamping to neonatal mortality7 and morbidity8 from respiratory distress syndrome, and an increased incidence of the respiratory distress syndrome has also been attributed to clamping the umbilical cord before onset of respirations.5 Well-controlled
