Abstract

WITH the increase in production of the so-called turkey “broiler” have come complaints that large type birds are inferior in finish to the small types. Some processors and retailers believe that the lack of finish, i.e. fatness, in large type turkeys used as broilers is seriously damaging consumer acceptance of turkey broilers in general. Several investigators have reported the effects of various estrogenic hormones in young turkeys. Thayer and Davis (1948) fed triphenylchloroethylene and dianisylhexene to young turkeys and noted an improvement in fattening as measured by visual fat grade. Almquist and Merritt (1952) implanted fifteen milligram pellets of diethylstilbestrol and noted slightly improved finish, increased gain, and better feed conversion. Smyth and Vondell (1955) also noted an increase in fat grade and a significant increase in gain. The present experiment was designed to test variety differences in response to diethylstilbestrol using improvement of finish and growth rate as criteria… .
