Abstract

Dieldrin injected into mature female Periplaneta americana reduces the volume of the corpora allata by about 15% within the first 24 hr of prostration. Males have a smaller decrease. Dieldrin does not increase the proportion of nuclei in the corpus allatum volume. The volume is not correlated with solvent, body weight, dehydration, or stage of oocyte development, but is proportional to the blood volume in fed cockroaches. Three possible mechanisms are considered. One is that dieldrin disturbs the normal nerve impulses from the brain, another is that there are changes of the nutrients in the blood, and a third is that the osmotic pressure of the blood increases. The biological significance of this shrinkage of the corpora allata is also uncertain.
