Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To investigate and compare the effectiveness of topical diclofenac sodium and dexamethasone sodium phosphate in the prevention of postoperative inflammatory reactions following lens implant surgery. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study of postoperative results at 1, 3, 5 and 15 days. SETTING: Ophthalmic Department of Uludag University Medical Faculty. PATIENTS: There were 46 randomly selected cases in two groups who all underwent the same type of cataract surgery (extracapsular cataract extraction with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Tyndall effect evaluated with ‘+' in ranges 1 to 4 and tolerance to the drugs. RESULTS: There was no statistical difference between the topical diclofenac and dexamethasone-treated groups ( P t -test). CONCLUSION: Diclofenac sodium appears to be promising for the control of postoperative inflammation. As it is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug it does not increase the intraocular pressure.
