Abstract

Recent theoretical studies on geological disposal of radioactive waste in fractured crystalline rock have indicated the importance of diffusion into the rock matrix. In this paper the analysis of results of experiments to find the diffusion coefficients and rock capacity factors for weakly-sorbed ions is discussed. The simplest analysis, using standard diffusion theory, often does not account for the results over the whole duration of the experiments. Improved agreement is obtained by using a new model in which the rock porosity is split into two parts: through-transport pores and dead-end pores. This new model is described, and its importance in repository calculations considered.
