Abstract

Summerlin (1973) reported that mouse and human skin allografts behaved as autografts after a period in a tissue culture medium. In man, he used 2× 2 cm pieces of skin cultured for 4 to 6 weeks and reported success in 4 patients with granulating wounds. To be of value clinically, however, homograft skin must be available in sizes much larger than Summerlin's and the following experiments were devised to see if his technique worked equally for large grafts.
