Abstract

The fluidity of the lipid bilayer in a cell membrane allows for the lateral diffusion of proteins and other membrane components, which is critical to biological processes such as the formation of membrane complexes and intercellular signaling. High degrees of membrane crowding can complicate diffusion in the cell membrane due to steric hindrance and clustering effects. Despite these ramifications, there is a limited understanding of the effects of inclusion crowding on two-dimensional membrane dynamics.
