Abstract

The effect of creep deformation in air on the d.c. conductivity of undoped and Cr-doped alumina crystals was studied by measuring directly the change of conductivity with creep strain. At temperatures near 1550°C and small strains, there is a decrease in d.c. conductivity of about 1.3 × 10-3 and 1.3 × 10-4 ohm-1 cm-1 per unit strain, respectively, for the undoped and Cr-doped (0.34 wt% Cr) specimens. Possible mechanisms for the observed decrease in d.c. conductivity with creep deformation in terms of scattering by dislocations are suggested.
