Abstract

BackgroundThe overwhelming number of COVID-19 cases and scarcity of resources took a major toll on the orthopaedic departments all around the world. There was a reduced inflow of patients to the orthopaedic department as outpatients, inpatients and surgical patients. Healthcare workers were also affected, which added to the impetus. Aims and objectivesThis is a retrospective observational study conducted to find the impact of COVID -19 outbreak and lockdown on orthopaedic department. MethodRetrospective observational study analysing the patient volume (outpatient, inpatient and patients undergoing surgery) in orthopaedic department of a major tertiary care centre in south India for a period of six months before and six months after imposing the lockdown. ResultAnalysis revealed almost 1/3rd drop in the patient load, mostly on inpatient care and major surgeries. Healthcare workers were also affected with COVID-19 infection. ConclusionThe assessment and analysis of the impact of such an outbreak will help us to prepare better and minimize its impact on health care in a similar pandemic in future.
