Abstract

The bulk volume magnetic Susceptibility χv,p of packed beds of ten ionic forms of Dowex 50W having a crosslinking of 4, 8, and 12% divinylbenzene are measured using a spinning coaxial cell technique. Proton chemical shifts are referenced relative to external hexamethyldisiloxane (HMD). The measured values of χv,p range from −0.730 to −0.795 c.g.s. units. The absolute value of χv,p generally increases with an increase in atomic mass of the counter ion. For a given counter ion |χv,p| increases as the crosslinking increases. Chemical shifts for water external to and internal to the ion-exchange bead phase are corrected for bulk Susceptibility differences between the reference and the packed bed. The widths at half height of the external water peak increase with an increase in |χv,p|.
