Abstract

The Coulomb screening effect, in conjunction with a particle velocity distribution, is shown to greatly enhance the cross-sections and reaction rates for deuteron-deuteron (D-D) and proton-deuteron (p-D) fusion for kinetic energies E≲50 eV in the center of mass (CM) frame. This may help to explain the observed fusion reaction rates from recent low-energy experiments, and indicates that p-D fusion may actually serve as an important source of internal energy for planetary bodies.
