Abstract

In order to get a more systematic view of the different effects of buoyant flow induced by gravity in directional solidification of metallic alloys, we made a study of the structure and composition of samples solidified with a parallel orientation relative to gravity on earth. The solute gradient in the melt immediately ahead of the mushy zone is not expected to be a major factor in solute convection for dendritic growth and the solute convection will be mostly dominated by the solute gradient in the interdendritic melt. The change in the length of the mushy zone affects the intensity of the solute convection because the length of mushy zone is not constant even when the steady-state dendritic growth is maintained during upward directional solidification.
