Abstract

Four experiments are described in which schizophrenic patients were asked to complete verbal passages varying in length and in verbal constraints. Their performance was compared with that of controls under normal conditions and under time‐pressure. The performance of the schizophrenic patients was in some ways similar to that of the controls under time‐pressure; both groups tended to associate to the first words of the sequences presented rather than following the given verbal constraints. It is suggested that the difference between schizophrenic and normal behaviour in the completion of verbal passages is mainly due to the speed with which incoming auditory stimuli are dealt with.
