Abstract

1. 1. The effect of chlorpromazine on respiration and anaerobic glycolysis on brain homogenates and mitochondrial preparations has been investigated. 2. 2. Aerobic respiration was found to be inhibited at the concentrations of the drug tested, while anaerobic metabolism was insensitive to chlorpromazine. 3. 3. An inhibitory action of the drug on the oxidation of α-ketoglutarate and on succinate was observed. The cytochrome oxidase system was similarly inhibited. 4. 4. The Mg ++-ATPase system was also blocked by the action of chlorpromazine. 5. 5. An uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation was also observed as part of the drug action.
