Abstract
SUMMARY In change-over type experiments the effects of cereal base of the diet and feeding method on in vivo pH changes and pepsin activity in the stomach of the growing pig were studied. In vivo pH levels and pepsin activity were inversely related. Barley-based diets and wet methods of feeding gave, overall, lower pH levels than maize-based diets and dry methods of feeding. Increasing the fibre level of maize-based diets, by adding coarse bran, lowered the pH level. It is suggested that such changes in gastric acidity and pepsin activity may be important in the aetiology of gastric ulceration and in modifying the activity of certain bacteria in the gut.
