Abstract

The compact layered double hydroxide (LDH) coatings, containing Mg2+ and Ce3+ as a bi- and trivalent metal cation, were prepared on AZ31 substrate by a combined co-precipitation and hydrothermal processing method for the first time. To investigate the effect of Ce ions on the deposition of the suitable coating on AZ31, the LDHs with different concentration of Ce were synthesized. In addition, the synthesized coatings were investigated by XRD, FTIR, SEM and TEM. Potentiodynamic polarization and EIS measurements were conducted to compare the corrosion behaviors of the coatings. The finding of this study proves that a compact coating with two kinds of the structure is successfully produced. The coating is highly appropriate for the protection of AZ31 magnesium alloy.
