Abstract

The effect of butanol on the micellar properties of sodium dodecyl sulfate in aqueous solutions containing a range of concentrations of sodium chloride has been investigated by quasi-electric light scattering. Butanol addition up to 1 M at constant electrolyte concentration caused a progressive decrease in hydrodynamic radius. Interpretation of diffusion data using the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory showed a decrease of surface charge with increase in concentration of added butanol.
