Abstract

Background: Blood-nerve barrier (BNB) plays a crucial role in the maintenance of peripheral nervous system homeostasis. It had been previously thought that the BNB was leaky compared with the blood-brain barrier (BBB) due to the lack of astrocytes and glia limitans, but recent reports showed that the BNB has equal strength as a barrier system with those with BBB. We previously revealed by immunohistochemical analysis that laminin α4 was hardly presented at BNB compared to BBB, while laminin α5 widely expressed in BBB and BNB, suggesting that BNB might have a distinct mechanism for T cell migration. However, it is still unknown how barrier function is controlled at the BNB via laminin isoforms.
