Abstract

Summary o 1. Dogs with chronic arterial occlusion had quadriceps muscle fatigue patterns studied with rhythmic stimulation with varying levels of aortic blood pressure. 2. The femoral artery pressures distal on an occlusion directly reflected changes in central aortic pressure. 3. Elevated femoral artery pressure due to intravenous infusion of levarterenol and phenylephrine significantly improved the muscle fatigue pattern while histamine infusion lowered femoral pressure and worsened the fatigue pattern. 4. This mechanism is suggested as a possible explanation for spontaneous improvement in some patients with intermittent claudication who develop hypertension.
