Abstract

Superabsorbent Polymer Composite (SAPC) hydrogel has been synthesized by graf copolymerization of mixture Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC), Acrylic Acid (AA), potassium persulfate (KPS) as initiator and N, N’-Methylene (Bis) Acrylamide (MBA ) as crosslinker. Composite was prepared by adding bentonite to the polymer hydrogel. Concentration of bentonite were varied in range of 0 -15 wt%. As fixed variable were AA 100 wt%, CMC 10 wt%, KPS 2.5 wt% and MBA 3.75 wt% at 60oC for 5 hours. The effect of bentonite on water absorbency was discussed and the highest water absorbancy of 54.38 g/g was obtain when the amount of bentonite in the feed was 10 wt%. The graft copolymerization reaction mechanism and morphology of the composite were also investigated by Fourier Transform-Infra Red (FT-IR) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Keywords: CMC, Superabsorbent composite, Hydrogel, Water absorbency, Bentonite.
