Abstract

Differences in the relative toxicity of the gases evolved from the thermal decomposition in air of cotton and nylon fabrics without and with backcoatings and without and with dyes were determined. There appeared to be no significant effect of backcoating on the toxicity of gases from cotton fabrics, nor of dye on the toxicity of gases from nylon fabrics. Increased backcoating may increase the toxicity of gases from nylon fabrics, and Direct Yellow 4 and Direct Red 28 dyes appeared to reduce the toxicity of gases from cotton fabrics under these particular test conditions.
