Abstract

In recent years, many investigators have studied the effect of axisymmetric meridional geometric imperfections on the static response of stress resultants in a hyperbolic cooling tower. In the present paper, using the solutions for axisymmetric shell finite elements the effect of geometric imperfections on the natural frequency and dynamic response to turbulent wind in a cooling tower has been evaluated. Through the illustrative numerical example of a typical tower with different kinds of geometric imperfections, it will be shown that the effect will increase with the decrease of imperfect wave length. Therefore, the effect of geometric imperfections on the dynamic response for determining the tolerance limits of geometric imperfection should be considered.
