Abstract

1177 PURPOSE: The main purpose of the study was to determine if the intake of a commercially available energy drink before exercise enhances aerobic performance in male athletes. A second aim of the study was to investigate if a specific type of personality relates to the placebo effect. METHODS: A double-blind repeatedmeasures randomized study was carried on eleven male athletes who completed in two different occasions a 10 km cross-country run. Subjects were properly hydrated, and physical activity and eating instructions were given before each test. Subjects arrived to the laboratory in a fasting state, then, 90 min before the run were weighted and received a standardized breakfast (1 g carbohydrates/kg body mass). Subjects were given 6 ml/kg body mass of either an energy drink (ED) or a placebo (PL) beverage 30 min before the run. Dependent variables measured were run time, perceived exertion and gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. Statistical analysis using SPSS 8.0 included descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, repeated measures t-student, and McNemar χ2 tests. RESULTS: No significant differences were found between mean run times (ED = 45:40.95 ± 4:16.86 min; PL = 46:07.33 ± 4:16.47 min) (p = 0.926). There was a significant mean difference in perceived exertion between beverages (p = 0.037) (ED = 7.02 ± 1.21; PL = 8.01 ± 0.75). No significant associations were found between ED or PL and GI symptoms (χ2 = 2.77, p > 0.05). No specific type of personality was related to the placebo effect. CONCLUSION: Athletes did not improve their running times when consumed a commercially-available energy drink; however, perceived exertion was lower when ED was ingested as opposed to the PL drink. There was not a clear association between type of drink and GI symptoms, even when a high percentage of subjects reported bloating, flatulence, side-pain and other GI symptoms (ED = 91%; PL = 73%). Finally, no direct relationship was found between type of personality and the placebo effect.
