Abstract

This paper explores employee deviant behaviors under uncomfortable, abnormally hot versus typical, weather conditions. A positive relationship between increases in ambient temperature and workplace deviance is proposed. To test this relationship two studies using time-period data collection method were conducted within a large chain of retail stores. The individual level survey data and observed behavioral store-level data were used to assess interpersonal and organization-directed deviance. The results of our analysis support the hypotheses. The implications for theory and research are discussed.
