Abstract

The effect of aluminum hydroxide on the acid base balance was determined in 23 patients with peptic ulcer. Three patients received more than 100 cc. daily for as long as 31 to 116 days; one patient received 393 cc. daily for 71 days. The period of observation in several cases exceeded 7 to 8 months. The electrolyte balance was normal in every instance. The blood urea nitrogen and urea clearance tests for renal function were determined in 14 patients of the group. Renal efficiency was not decreased in any patient in whom it had been normal. The use of aluminum hydroxide in three patients with a marked reduction in kidney function following alkalosis, was followed by the maintenance of a normal acid base balance and by a gradual improvement in the urea clearance.
