Abstract

AbstractSimple calculations have been made of the shift in the energy gap in PbTe when alloyed with small amounts of Sn and Ge. The calculated energy shifts, which are of opposite sign for these two systems, are in rough agreement with experiment [1,2]. They are the sums of contributions produced by the strain field, the change in the short‐range potential, and the change in the relativistic energy. A variational method has been used, containing a trial function based on published details of the wave functions in PbTe.
