Abstract

e17636 Background: Trials support an increasing role for chemotherapy in elderly non-small cell lung cancer patients (pts), but there is less information in SCLC. Age-related changes in organ function and co-morbid health problems may impact on toxicity and expected survival gains for the elderly. This study investigated the impact of age, on trends in the treatment of SCLC pts over a decade. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted of all Ontario pts diagnosed with SCLC between Jan 1, 2000-Dec 31, 2010. De-identified demographic, staging, treatment and outcome information were extracted by the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences. The primary outcomes were the proportion of older (≥70) v younger pts referred to an oncologist and receipt of chemotherapy (CT). Results: Of 9,021 pts, 3,862 (42.8%) were ≥70 years (yrs) old.
